Office 2000 and later can detect and repair problems with Office apps for you. You can use the Detect and Repair feature from within most of the Office 2000 programs -- if the problem isn't severe enough to prevent the program from starting in the first place. Start the program, choose Help, Detect and Repair and let it do its thing. It may ask you for the Office CD.

Since you can also start the repair process from Control Panel at any time, whether or not the Office programs will start up, we'll explain that method here. You can also use this procedure to add or remove other Office components.

  • First of all, you'll need your Office CDs. Keep them handy while you perform the following steps.
  • Click Start, point to Settings and click Control Panel
  • In Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs to see a screen that looks something like this:
  • Note: Your list of programs will be different, of course, and your copy of Office might be listed as Premium, Professional, Standard or similar, depending on which version of Office you have installed.
  • Locate your version of Microsoft Office in the list of programs and double-click it. You'll see a message telling you that the Office setup program is preparing to install, then you'll see the Office Maintenance Mode dialog box or something similar:
  • Click Repair Office. This screen appears:
  • Click Repair errors in my Office installation and optionally put a checkmark next to Restore my shortcuts if your Start menu and/or desktop icons have been deleted or don't work correctly.
  • Click Finish and follow the installer's instructions from here. The Office Installer will check your Office installation and repair any problems it can detect. If it needs a specific installation CD, it will prompt you for it.
  • Note: If you're simply adding or removing Office components rather than trying to repair a problem, click Add or Remove Features instead of Repair Office in the Office Maintenance Mode dialog box and follow the installer instructions from there.
