Asian languages (Chinese/Japanese/Korean or CJK) may be supported at different levels - by special additional software, by the operating system/Windows itself or by individual applications.

Install Asian Language Support

To install Japanese, for example, in Windows XP, follow these steps:

Choose Start, Control Panel.
In Control Panel, doubleclick Regional and Language Options.
In the Regional and Language Options dialog box that opens, go to the Languages tab.

Put a checkmark next to "Install files for East Asian languages" then click Apply. You MUST click Apply before proceeding or the next step won't work.
When you click apply, you'll see this message:

Click OK. Windows installs the needed support files.
Next click Details.
In the Text Services and Input Languages dialog box that opens, click Add

In the Add input language dialog box that opens, choose the desired Input language
Windows automatically selects a "Keyboard layout/IME"
Click OK to return to Text Services and input Languages

Click "Properties", "Language Bar ..." and "Key Settings ..." to acquaint yourself with the various options you can choose. For now don't change anything.
When you're done, click OK to return to the Regional and Language Options dialog box
Click OK
You'll now be able to use the language selection tool on the toolbar to switch between languages.

The options on the taskbar change depending on the language you select.

You can also opt to show the Language Bar, which gives you a floating toolbar with language options.

Language Support in PowerPoint / Office 2003

Once you've installed the new language in Windows, you can start PowerPoint or other Office programs, choose the language you want from the language bar and go to work.

Office 2002 / XP needs more help

Office 2002 includes CJK support as an optionally installed feature. To see whether it's installed on your computer, start PowerPoint then choose Format, Font from the main menu bar.

If CJK support is installed, you may have access to other features like vertical text boxes from the Drawing toolbar and additional layouts that support vertical text and/or vertical titles.

To install CJK support in Office XP, install the Language Settings Tool in Office. On the Office CD it's listed under Office Tools, Language Settings Tool.

To disable a language, choose Start, Programs, Microsoft Office Tools, Microsoft Office XP Language Settings. In the Microsoft Office Language Settings dialog box, on the Enabled Languages tab, Enabled Languages list, click the one you want to remove, then click Remove.
