The likely cause is that you've installed a PowerPoint add-in that's interfering with the double-click action.

What add-ins are loaded? for a complete list of all loaded add-ins. If you find one of the add-ins mentioned above, uninstall it using the manufacturer's instructions (or if no instructions are available, try using Tools, Add-ins, select the add-in and click Remove).
